Review of Energy Northwest’s Highway 12 EV Charging Project

Energy Northwest pocketed almost $2 million in government grants to build eight EV charging stations along Highway 12 in Washington, from Chehalis to White Pass Ski Area. According to project specifications, each station was supposed to include one Level 3 (fast) charger and one Level 2 charger.

In practice, none of the fast chargers were compatible with Tesla, which is the most popular EV in the U.S. From my experience, the fast chargers at White Pass was never operational and was completely removed a year or two ago.

I’ve only occasionally seen Teslas charging at the Level 2 station at White Pass — but even that charger is now broken.

Government in action, indeed.

For context, I’ve driven along the West Coast of the U.S. in a Tesla five times and never encountered broken Tesla Superchargers, so this situation on Highway 12 is extremely frustrating and disappointing.

The project itself was led by Energy Northwest, in collaboration with Lewis County Public Utility District, Twin Transit, and local organizations, with Resound Energy LLC as contractor and JSA Civil LLC as engineering firm. Despite the heavy government funding and partnerships, the result has been practically unusable for the majority of EV drivers.

Reliable charge but $0.62/kwh is way too expensive for a not so fast 62.5 kW DC charger. Some comparable speed chargers are close to half that. Not sure why Energy Northwest set the rate so high. I guess the demand of being near the pass? I'll avoid if I can due to the cost.

It worked the first time I came through but when I came back over the mountain a couple hours later it wouldn’t charge.  It’s a good location for a DCFS because the nearest Tesla chargers on Highway 12 are Yakima and Chehalis.
