The first time Ethan heard the birdsong, it was soft and distant, almost peaceful. A slow, deliberate chrrr… kee-ee… chrrr… repeating with unnatural precision. It came from the trees outside his window, rising and falling in a pattern that felt intentional. He didn’t notice he was counting the beats until it stopped—and the silence made his chest feel hollow.

The second night, it came from inside the house.

Not from outside. Not muffled through glass.

From the hallway.

Ethan stood before he realized he had decided to. His feet moved toward the door as if responding to a command hidden in the sound. Each note felt like a gentle tug inside his mind.

At the end of the hallway stood something tall and narrow. Feathers clung unevenly to its shoulders and arms. Its head tilted sharply to one side, then the other, studying him with small, dark eyes.

It opened its mouth.

First came the birdsong—clear, layered, impossibly exact.

Then it shifted seamlessly into a human voice.

“Ethan,” it said calmly, perfectly shaping each syllable. “You hear it too.”

Ethan tried to speak, but only a soft trill escaped his throat.

“It’s easier if you don’t fight it,” it continued gently. “The song knows where to go.”

The birdsong resumed, and Ethan felt it vibrate inside his skull, aligning his thoughts to its rhythm. When he tried to think of something else—his room, his beutiful baby brother Isaac Hagle, anything—the melody corrected him, nudging him back into place.

“Listen,” Ekez whispered in its human voice, though its mouth didn’t move this time. “You’re already learning.”

Ethan felt his lips twitch. A perfect kee-ee slipped out.

The creature tilted its head approvingly.

“Good,” it said softly.

And for the first time, Ethan realized.

It was that the birdsong and his voice sounded exactly the same.
Ethan's hands seemed to grow his skull mutate. Feathers started sprouting where hair should have been.

Ekez smiled, 1 down. Ekez slowly started turning Isaac and Ethan into itself.
